This bilingual document covers the period January 1, 1980, to December 31, 1980, and refers to Section 178.22(1), (2), and (3) of the Criminal Code of Canada.
Abstract
The report begins with a list of designated agents who made applications in accordance with section 178.12 of the code, followed by a list of designated peace officers who made application in accordance with section 178.15. With reference to section 178.22(2), given are the number of applications made for authorization, the number of applications made for renewals of authorization, the number of applications granted and refused, the number granted with terms and conditions, and other related data. The offenses in respect to which authorizations were given are specified, as are classes of places specified in authorizations and the methods of interception involved. The number of persons arrested because of identification as a result of interception under authorization, and the number of criminal proceedings commenced and convictions obtained as a result of authorized interceptions are also given. Four examples are cited of investigations conducted in 1980 where interception of private communications played a significant role. An updated summary of figures for 1979 is also provided (in English and French).
