Abstract
The Home Office Research Unit provides a comprehensive service of research and professional advice in the social sciences, including criminology. It initiates and carries out research for administrative purposes and for the formulation of policy. In addition, it encourages and assists such research by universities and other organizations. Projects currently operating in crime prevention include those focusing on school burglary, residential burglary, and crime prevention practice. Projects focusing on ethnic relations include one on resettlement of Vietnamese refugees and another on police training. The history of English criminal policy is being researched under the category of criminal procedure, while criteria for psychiatric remands and sentencing in the crown court are being studied under the category of administration of justice. Other classifications of research cover police effectiveness, community policing, community studies, juveniles, diversion from custody, and prisons. An index to the projects is included. Appendixes list completed projects, articles published by the research unit staff, all Home Office research reports, and Government bookshops and agents.
