Abstract
Abstracts summarize findings of each of the studies cited. The first section presents three evaluative studies that report on (1) the area board classification system formerly used by the Department; (2) the Care About Now Program which addresses the needs of inmates involved in substance abuse; and (3) the Reach Out Program, a juvenile counseling program conducted by inmates at Walpole. Research reported in the second section focused on community reintegration of ex-inmates. One series of reports examines persons housed at facilities operated by Massachusetts Halfway Houses, Inc. Other research dealt with the Charlotte House Program for female ex-inmates and the programs of drug contract houses. The third section of reports summarizes operational management studies. One report describes an attempt to develop a salient factor scale for use by the Department, and an attempt to update and improve the corrections information system is portrayed. Section four reviews research that examined recent trends in the Department of Correction. Reports examine commitments and activities of the Department to determine any significant new trends. One study examined a sample of women released from the Framingham Institution for Women. The final section presents seven annual statistical reports which describe background characteristics of persons committed to and released from Massachusetts correctional institutions and houses of correction. Reports describing population movements in the corrections system and participation in the furlough program are also included. A subject index is provided. (Author summary modified)
