Abstract
Activities are briefly described for armed offenders squads and the National Drug Intelligence Bureau. Operations are described in the areas of telecommunications, crime prevention, training, search and rescue, youth aid, and control of firearms. Management and personnel information is provided, along with statistics on offenses and clearance for the calendar year 1976. The total of 243,348 offenses for 1976 was 9,704 higher than the previous year. This was a 4.15 percent increase compared to an 8 percent increase in 1975. The clearance rate was 49.7 percent, compared with 49.5 percent in 1975. During the year, 15,660 offenses reported in previous years were cleared, giving a gross clearance rate of 56.1 percent. Extra burdens placed on the police in the course of the year included (1) matters connected with changing policies regarding sporting contacts with South Africa, (2) the visit of nuclear-powered vessels to New Zealand ports, (3) the need for additional security measures at airports to meet the threat of terrorism or hijacking, (4) additional duties relating to immigration, (5) 40 murders, and (6) the royal tour.
