Activities are briefly described for the following police agencies or units: the National Drug Intelligence Bureau, armed offender squads, the antiterrorist squad, the airport police, and hostage negotiation teams. Other operations and concerns discussed include management, buildings and land, patrol cars, police dogs, telecommunications, search and rescue, training, public affairs, and staff. A major police operation during the year was the recovery of the bodies and the subsequent identification of 257 passengers and crew in November's Antarctic air disaster. Another major police operation was the perfomance of evacuation, security, and welfare functions occasioned by the massive land sinking at Abbotsford, which left hundreds of residents homeless. There is particular concern for the violent gang confrontations involving firearms and other weapons. In August at Moertewa in Northland, gang violence was directed against a small contingent of police endeavoring to disperse gang members involved in unlawful activity. Police efforts to control and eradicate unlawful gang activity have been maintained as a high priority. Fifty additional staff approved for team police units have strengthened response ability in this area. Significant steps have also been taken to counter international drug trafficking, including the appointment of a liaison officer to Sydney, Australia in March 1980. Statistics are provided for offenses reported and those cleared for calendar year 1979.
