Increases were registered in the categories of violent crimes (14.3 percent), firearms use (15.4 percent), theft offenses (5.8 percent), and drug-related offenses (25.3 percent). Crimes evidencing small decreases were murder and sexual child abuse, while real estate and construction fraud decreased by 47 percent and credit fraud by 23 percent. Police solved 40.5 percent of the total crime incidents and 77 percent of the violent crimes. The total number of suspects taken in custody was 345,843, of which 51.9 percent were under age 25. Youthful offenders and juveniles under 21 were responsible for 54.8 percent of the robberies, 51.4 percent of the theft offenses, 59.6 percent of the property damage offenses, and 41.8 of the drug-related offenses.
