This textbook on police-community relations instructs officers in managing everyday duties, such as controlling traffic and responding to calls, as well as handling special population groups so that troublesome situations are resolved and police retain a positive image.
Abstract
The book, arranged in 17 topical chapters, first establishes the nature of police-community relations and the constraints that characterize both groups' interaction. Public evaluations of the police are analyzed to suggest how officers can improve their image. Most chapters deal with traditional law enforcement duties from the standpoint of community relations. These include enforcing traffic laws; interacting with victims, complainants, and witnesses; defusing violent situations; handling special groups (rape victims, minority groups, the elderly, handicapped, and alcoholics); policing potentially violent public events; and handling grievances. Common reasons for poor rapport with the community are discussed, as well as the effects of occupational stress on the public and on officers. Tips are given on achieving positive media relations. Each chapter includes anecdotal illustrations and study questions. A community relations checklist, an index, and 37 references are included.
