This report summarizes 3 months of crime reports received by the Colorado Springs Police Department (Colorado), as categorized under the new reporting system.
Abstract
Report data reflect criminal activities between January 1 and March 31, 1980. The new system was designed to be comprehensive, victim-oriented, geographically based, automated, and based upon the best criminological analytic techniques. The system emphasizes nonlegal, victim-oriented crime classifications, reporting of offense information not previously reported, and innovations in the portrayal of results. The five categories of classification include injury events, loss events, injury and loss events, regulatory events, and incomplete events, as related to impact on the victim. The system includes information on time and place of the occurrence, level and type of injury to the victim, medical treatment received by the victim, victim/offender relationship, weapons used, nature and value of the property stolen, and victim demographic information. The new reporting system conveys information on three levels: crime volume, rate, and trends. It is anticipated that the system will increase the public's knowledge of the actual nature of crimes committed. For all five categories of offenses, 4,532 incidents were reported during the 3-month period. Extensive tables and charts are provided.
