REASONS FOR DETENTION OF CHILDREN IN JAILS AND SUGGESTIONS TO THE LAW AND COURTS TO KEEP THEM OUT.
Abstract
CHILDREN DO NOT BELONG IN JAIL SINCE IT IS MORALLY AND EMOTIONALLY HARMFUL TO THEM. POLICIES ARE NEEDED TO PROHIBIT JAILING CHILDREN, TO HAVE A COURT INTAKE OFFICER AVAILABLE ON A 24-HOUR BASIS, TO RELEASE CHILDREN TO FAMILIES, AND TO TAKE A CHILD INTO CUSTODY ONLY WHEN NECESSARY TO PROTECT THE CHILD. MORE SHELTER HOMES AND 48-HOUR HOLDOVER FACILITIES ARE NEEDED TO REPLACE DETENTION HOMES.
