This discussion notes the increasing upward trend in the armed robbery of banks and commercial establishments in Quebec and seeks socioeconomic and environmental factors to explain the high incidence of this crime form in the rapidly developing Province.
Abstract
It refers to a study that considered the kinds of security measures used by the victimized businesses, architectural features of the facilities, offender characteristics, police action, and citizen attitudes toward violent crime. The crime trends ascertained by this and other studies indicate that Quebec has the highest armed robbery incidence in the country. Reasons for this are deemed to be the rapid upsurge of economic development of the Province, which has disoriented all aspects of society, including education, administration of justice, the urban environment, and communications. These transitions have ruptured the sense of continuity of Quebec inhabitants with the past of the region and effected overall deterioration of values. Those under 20 have no concept of a more stable society. Most of the development, including architecture, music, and television programs are foreign imports that damage the unique identity of Quebec. This general erosion of social cohesiveness has disoriented a generation of youths and caused an upsurge in violent crimes. A total of 31 references are given.
