Testimony from Federal legislators and representatives of pharmacies and pharmacists speaks to proposed legislation that would make it a Federal crime to rob a pharmacy of a controlled substance.
Abstract
The legislation making it a Federal crime to rob a pharmacy of a controlled substance is said to stem from the growing threat to druggists and pharmacy customers posed by the increasing number of armed robberies of pharmacies to secure controlled drugs. The initiators of the legislation indicate that the increase in such robberies is probably partly attributable to the effectiveness of Federal efforts in countering the trafficking of illegal drugs originating from outside the country. It is anticipated that the proposed legislation will have a deterrent effect on pharmacy robberies by ensuring potential offenders that the resources of Federal law enforcement will be brought to bear on the apprehension of such offenders and that uniform and severe sentences will be applied. Representatives of the National Association of Retail Druggists and Peoples Drug Stores favor Federal legislation in this area because of the growing problem and serious threat it poses to employees and customers. The proposed legislation is appended.
