The abstracts were drawn from the data base of ABC-Clio Information Services, which includes abstracts of articles from over 2,000 journals in 42 languages, published in 90 countries. Each of the eight chapters covers a particular aspect of crime or criminal justice. The first chapter offers abstracts of both general articles on crime and articles on criminal organizations. Several chapters examine particular kinds of criminal activity: crimes of violence; crimes against property; riots, public disturbances, and civil disobedience; political crimes and corruption; and 'victimless' crimes such as gambling, prostitution, and narcotics use. One chapter focuses on the criminal justice system's role in the maintenance of order and the establishment of guilt. The final chapter includes studies of penal institutions and reform, the death penalty, punishments as rehabilitation or retribution, and the history of internment and prisoner-of-war camps in the United States.
