Abstract
A total of 34 witnesses testified, and 24 parties submitted additional materials. The first hearing addressed the issue of Federal leadership and coordination, as well as the question of funding. Also discussed was Bill HR 3359, which attempts to address the question of the role of the Federal Government in crime control. The second hearing also heard from criminal justice professionals from the Department of Justice, the American Bar Association and others. Testimony at one hearing focused on the upsurge in crime in southern Florida as an example of the kinds of problems faced by States. Most of Florida's increase in crime stemmed from drug trafficking. Federal support is necessary to combat this problem. Another hearing reviewed specific steps that might be taken by the Federal Government to help State and local criminal justice agencies control crime.
