Abstract
Rape crisis and sexual assault centers are discussed, and the types of services they may offer are outlined, including 24-hour crisis lines, advocate counselors, and inservice training. Approaches to teaching about sexual assault are suggested, and the teacher's role in the prevention and intervention of child sexual abuse and rape is identified. An overview of sexual assault is provided; attention is focused on reporting child abuse. Who is required to report, what must be reported, and what happens once the report is made are addressed. Lesson plans for 1 week of classes on sexual assault are presented for use at the junior high and high school levels. Each lesson includes objectives, a description of the teacher's preparation, suggested activities, and recommended resources. Background information on sexual assault is included and covers such areas as sexual harassment, victim reactions to rape, sexual exploitation of the mentally and physically handicapped, treatment of offenders, and rape mythology. A historical and sociological overview of sexual assault is provided. Appendixes contain the text of the Washington State Child Sexual Abuse Reporting Law and revisions to Washington's criminal code. A listing of resources includes 14 services, 18 books, 6 booklets, and 20 films. Six film distributors are listed.
