Violent felony indictments accounted for 50.4 percent of all indictments, and 73.5 percent of the violent felony indictments resulted in convictions. State prison was the sentence in 58 percent of the cases; the median processing time was 158 days. A total of 13,363 arrests for felony firearms offenses were reported during 1983, resulting in 11,389 firearm indictments. The statewide conviction rate was 79.7 percent, and the median processing time from indictment to disposition was 172 days. A total of 1,020 transcripts of court cases cited mitigating circumstances which affected mandatory sentence terms. Thirteen figures and 59 tables illustrate the data.
