This webinar will explore critical concepts, strategies, and tips for mentors and program staff to consider when interacting with youth about tough issues such as drugs or sex, problems in families, illnesses, mental health, death and bereavement, and violence.

Since many mentees face high challenges and embody marginalized identities, our understanding of how to address difficult issues must include awareness of trauma and its effect on development, as well as cultural concerns and issues of inequity and oppression.

Dr. Dustianne North will present key communication approaches and will facilitate an interactive discussion featuring highly-esteemed experts Dr. Torie Weiston and Dr. Jaime Romo.

Dr. Weiston will discuss her research on critical mentoring and meeting the needs of youth of color in mentoring programs, and Dr. Romo will share about his work in trauma-informed and culturally-relevant practice.

This webinar is part of the Collaborative Mentoring Webinar Series, which is funded by the Office of Juvenile Justice and Delinquency Prevention through the National Mentoring Resource Center and facilitated in partnership with MENTOR: The National Mentoring Partnership.
