September 12, 2019 - September 13, 2019
Mother Emanuel Empowerment Center
City: Charleston
State/Territory: South Carolina
Country: USA
Event Site: Charleston Marriott
Mass shootings are very serious, and within the past year unfortunately, they have been at the center of many headline news stories.

Whenever these events occur the victims' families are left to figure out how to create a "new normal" without their loved one. However, when the mass shooting is a hate crime, and occurs in a church, a place that has historically been considered a safe place for the community, the trauma is compounded.

The Empowering Our Community with Hope & Healing Following the Mother Emanuel Massacre Conference will provide members of Mother Emanuel African Methodist Episcopal Church, survivors, victims' families, faith-based communities, victim advocates and helping professionals with the opportunity gain insight and hope from attending workshops such as Race-Based Trauma 101, The Intersection of Faith, Race & Culture After a Mass Violent Event, Thriving in the Wake of Trauma, Transitioning from Pain to Purpose, just to name a few.

Day One of the Conference is for the members of Mother Emanuel AME Church, survivors and the family members of the Emanuel Nine.

Day Two will include the participants from Day One, faith-based community members, victims and helping professionals. The workshops will be informative and offer hope and healing.

The conference will serve as the culminating event for the project supported by Award Number 2016-RF-GX-0001 awarded by the Office for Victims of Crime.
