Title: Kids in Illinois Deserve Safety (KIDS) - A Multifaceted Child Safety Program (From Sexual Exploitation of the Child, P 84-89, 1986, Thomas M Frost and Magnus J Seng, eds. - See NCJ-104925)
Author(s): J Margolis
Date Published: 1986
Annotation: This description of the components of Kids in Illinois Deserve Safety (KIDS) focuses on services that address the problem of runaway, missing, and sexually exploited children.
Abstract: The program involves police, social service, and community professionals working together to implement a multifaceted child safety program. One component is the expansion of the Illinois State Enforcement Agencies Recovering Children, a computer program which provides for the interface of missing children information. Another major program component is an increased enforcement effort by specially trained officers who deal only with missing children cases. A number of special agents are targeting the sexual exploitation of children. Another effort involves the expansion of the existing Computerized Abuse Neglect Tracking System, a statewide hot line for the reporting of sexual or physical child abuse. Plans are underway for State police child safety officers to provide age-specific safety information to children and their parents. Other plans are for the voluntary fingerprinting of children, a clearinghouse that lists public and private groups that provide significant information and services relevant to child safety, and legislative proposals pertinent to child safety. Current legislative recommendations are summarized.
