Abstract: THESE PROBLEMS INCLUDE ATTEMPTS TO ESTIMATE THE AMOUNT OF 'HIDDEN' DELINQUENCY THRU VICTIM SURVEYS AND 'SELF REPORT' STUDIES IN WHICH PERSONS ARE ASKED ABOUT OFFENCES WHICH THEY HAVE COMMITTED. OTHERS DEAL WITH THE DELINQUENT SUBCULTURE, OFFENDER TYPOLOGY, AND THE DECISION MAKING PROCESS IN SENTENCING. ADDITIONAL MATERIAL IS DEVOTED TO RESEARCH ON THE EFFECTIVENESS OF PUNISHMENTS AND TREATMENTS. THESE CHAPTERS DISCUSS THE POST-RELEASE CONDUCT OF OFFENDERS WHO HAVE RECEIVED DIFFERENTIAL TREATMENT, AND TREATMENT-OFFENDER MATCHING. THE FINAL CHAPTER CONSIDERS SOCIOLOGICAL RESEARCH IN PRISONS, AND THE EFFECTS OF IMPRISONMENT. THROUGHOUT THE BOOK ATTENTION IS PAID TO QUESTIONS OF RESEARCH DESIGN AND TECHNIQUES OF INVESTIGATION.
