Abstract: THE CHALLENGE OF CORRECTIONAL REFORM CONFRONTS ALL THOSE WHO ARE WORKING WITH INMATES OR FORMER INMATES. IN RESPONSE TO THIS CHALLENGE, THIS VOLUME PRESENTS AN EVALUATION OF THE PROBLEM OF CRIME IN SOCIETY AND AN OVERVIEW OF THE ROLE OF CORRECTIONS IN THE CONTEXT OF THE CRIMINAL JUSTICE SYSTEM. THE CAUSES OF CRIME ARE ANALYZED PRIMARILY FROM THE STANDPOINT OF THE PSYCHOLOGICAL ASPECTS OF THE NORMAL OFFENDER. THE REHABILITATION COUNSELOR IS PROVIDED WITH A BASIC KNOWLEDGE OF THE PRINCIPLES AND OPERATIONS OF CRIMINAL LAW AND PROCEDURE SO THAT HE WILL UNDERSTAND MORE FULLY THE POSITION OF HIS CLIENT. THE JUDICIAL ROLE IN CORRECTIONAL ADMINISTRATION AND THE EFFECT OF RECENT DECISIONS RELATING TO THE RIGHTS OF CONVICTED OFFENDERS ARE EMPHASIZED, SINCE THE JUDICIAL SYSTEM IS INVOLVED IN CORRECTIONS UNTIL AN OFFENDER'S SENTENCE HAS EXPIRED. A STATE-OF-THE-ART REVIEW OF CORRECTIONAL SYSTEMS AND PROGRAMS PROVIDES INSIGHT INTO THE 3 STAGES OF PROBATION, INSTITUTIONALIZATION AND PAROLE. THE SECOND PART OF THE TEXT DESCRIBES THE INDIVIDUAL IN THE CORRECTIONAL SETTING. IT DISCUSSES CRIMINAL TYPOLOGIES WHICH LEND SOCIAL AND PSYCHOLOGICAL DIMENSIONS TO THE LEGAL LABELS ALREADY ASSIGNED TO OFFENDERS AND SUGGESTS WAYS IN WHICH THESE TYPOLOGIES CAN BE USEFUL TO TREATMENT SELECTION. A PICTURE OF THE EFFECTS OF INCARCERATION ON MEMBERS OF THE PRISON COMMUNITY IS CONSTRUCTED FROM AN INMATES VIEWPOINT OF PRISON CONDITIONS.
