Abstract: |
Standards for victim information during the criminal investigation encompass timely in person death notification to next of kin and information on the criminal justice process, victim compensation, the status of the investigation, and property returns. Victim treatment during the criminal investigation includes accompaniment of the victim to investigative events, an appropriate environment for victim interviews, interpreters, immediate medical attention, property return, and services for victims' families. Victim standards during the investigation also cover victim-witness protection and various services to help the victim cope with the crime's effects. Standards for victim services during prosecution also address information requirements, victim treatment, protection, and services. Standards for victim services after case disposition cover information on sentencing, the composition and submission of impact statements at parole, and social service and long-term counseling referrals. |
