Abstract: |
After AIDS and HIV infection were reported in Tanzania in 1984, the Misintry of Health established a task force to minitor the disease and to advise the ministry of control measures. Epidemiological studies soon established that the main mode of transmission was heterosexual contact. The Health Education Unit started public education campaigns. The Swedish Agency for Research Cooperation in Developing Countries helped with screening. In addition, WHO assumed the leadership role in helping the Ministry of Health to organize its AIDS control meeting and a 1987 meeting that resulted in pledges of $4 million in donations from several other nations. Such international cooperation is a prerequisite to global efforts in eradicating this pandemic. Tables and 3 references. |
