Type: Training (Handbook/Manual)
Language: English
Country: United States of America
Annotation: This manual contains four components designed for use in inservice training programs for staff in substance abuse treatment programs on how to address the special issues that AIDS introduces to their services.
Abstract: The four sections focus on human sexuality; counseling regarding reducing the risk of contracting or spreading AIDS; issues specifically related to gay, lesbian, and bisexual clients; and issues related to women. Individual topics include psychosexual development, sexual functioning and dysfunction, sexually transmitted diseases, safer sex, the use of a client risk assessment, techniques for risk-reduction counseling, the development of sexual orientation, counseling issues regarding sexual orientation, the use of an empowering counseling approach with women, and the use of action planning to address women's needs. The training activities for each section require 1 day or less and can be used for a single training event or for a series of meetings. The trainers' guidelines explain the facilities and materials needed, preparation for training, the use of the participant's manual, and the course objectives. They also provide an evaluation form and a detailed content outline, together with the time requirements for each topic. The participants' manuals include self-assessment instruments, background information, and reprints of journal articles.
