Annotation: This article reports on a Canadian study using air sampling and ion-mobility spectrometry (IMS) for detecting heroin and cocaine concealed in mail.
Abstract: The study was undertaken to determine whether air sampling and IMS tests were feasible for detecting narcotics shipped illegally through the Canadian mails. Both heroin and cocaine were identifiable by unique IMS signatures. The number of IMS peaks can be used as markers for the presence of drugs. When mail was tested, no false readings resulted, and sampling and analysis times of less than 30 seconds were achieved for detecting cocaine and heroin. Consequently, IMS testing was found to be a fast and reliable method for screening mail suspected of carrying cocaine or heroin. Additionally, the method promises to be effective in detecting drugs on people and in luggage. 16 references. (Author abstract modified)
