Annotation: The sworn internship program provides Ohio communities with professionally trained and field-proven candidates for employment.
Abstract: The Tiffin University Sworn Internship Program blends classroom theory and law enforcement practice to produce trained, certified, and field-proven candidates for a police agency's consideration. The program screens candidates over a 2 1/2-year period. When aspiring sworn interns begin their first criminal justice class, they are informed of the criticality and arduousness of the years ahead. On the average, only four or five juniors are selected for the program out of an initial 15 to 25 freshmen indicating an interest. The candidates commit to a six-course sequence: four courses of police academy training and two 150-hour internships. The program allows students the opportunity to gain field experience as sworn police officers with a participating police department under the direct supervision of a field training officer and general supervision by the commander of the police academy, who also serves as the program coordinator. The intern is required to enroll in two university internship classes and complete a minimum of 300 hours of field work. The intern must also submit a work plan, a weekly journal of activities, a skills checklist, training officer evaluations, and a final paper. Either during or after the field experience, the intern will complete a research project. Because of the high standards and selection criteria, only nine students have completed the program since it began in 1985. 3 notes.
