Abstract: The course covers both handguns and shotguns in four areas of instruction: basic recruit training, qualification course of fire, minimum facility standards, and firearms instructor course. The handgun course has seven stages and the shotgun course has two. The basic recruit training requires 56 total hours of instruction to allow average recruits to develop skills, to satisfy the learning objectives, and to qualify with both types of firearms. The basic course covers firearms safety procedures, ammunition use, service weapon use on the range, shotgun use of the range, and chemical agent use. The qualification courses of fire cover handguns and shotguns. The handgun course uses 6-shot revolvers and semi-automatic pistols for qualification and covers close distance firing, clearing the holsters, multiple targets, neutralizing the suspect, and use of available cover. The shotgun course is designed for rapid weapon alignment and use of multiple targets at intermediate range. The guide offers minimum facility standards to ensure safety of instructors, shooters, and the public. The firearms instructor course consists of 44 hours of instruction and practical exercises covering range management, administration and orientation, legal issues in firearms, basic shooting principles, shooting deficiency, firearms and equipment familiarization, officer survival consideration, discretionary/decision-making, and testing.
