Annotation: This paper identifies career issues emanating from the dual responsibilities of the probation officer as a police officer and a social worker and the respective coping strategies.
Abstract: In coordinating the investigative/enforcement tasks with the counseling responsibilities, the probation officer may confront conflicts which will require resolution to avoid negative effects on job performance and motivation. The six issues identified include idealistic expectations versus reality; manipulation or taking the rap; intangible work product; status, mobility, and compensation; and burnout. These issues impact officers in different ways with different intensity. A few call for minor adjustments, while recognition, rewards, and burnout can result in a poor attitude and unsatisfactory work experience. Thus it is important for both the officer and management to work towards a successful resolution of these issues. Both have an important stake in the outcome: the probation officer will be satisfied with his career choice, and the administrators will receive a better work product. 4 references
