Annotation: This teaching guide is designed to assist instructors in planning lessons on police procedures for auto theft investigations and impoundment and storage of vehicles.
Abstract: It covers sections of the California Vehicle Code and California Penal Code pertinent to vehicle theft investigations. Guidelines are provided for vehicle theft reports, including types of theft, preliminary investigation, and vehicle identification number. Information is reviewed regarding procedures for vehicle storage or impound covers, types of forms to complete for storage or impounding, and appropriate course of action for vehicles that are abandoned, traffic hazard, safekeeping, stolen and recovered, held for investigation, hit and run, VIN removed, or operated by an unlicensed driver.
