Annotation: This report presents background information regarding school discipline and school crime and the measures being taken to maintain safe schools.
Abstract: Surveys and other studies have revealed that violence and vandalism are significant problems for today's students and that the American public has long regarded discipline as one of the most important problems facing schools. Specific problems include bullying, alcohol and other drug trafficking and abuse, juvenile gangs, high dropout rates, truancy, and daytime burglary. Education law has become increasingly important in society, and California voters recognized the right to safe schools in a 1982 referendum on victims' rights. To address these problems, school and law enforcement leaders must work to focus joint attention on providing safer schools with increased attendance and improved discipline as well as schools that are free of alcohol and other drugs.
