Annotation: An overview of national trends in academic and vocational educational programs for adult and juvenile male sex offenders are identified in this study of 103 programs administered by State correctional institutions.
Abstract: Following a review of literature focusing on sex offenses, treatment, and prison education, questionnaires were sent to program administrators to ascertain academic and vocational programs offered to inmates. Data was obtained from survey research methods. Geographical analysis of the treatment programs indicated differential distribution patterns and trends, with the majority of programs located in the northeastern United States. Data demonstrated most institutions use adjuncts to supplement treatment and educational programs for both adult and juvenile sex offenders. The educational modalities most frequently used were vocational education, life skills, and the General Education Diploma, suggesting that providers prefer teaching basic skills to equip inmates for future employment. According to administrators, programs were successful in controlling the intensity and frequency of inappropriate sexual behaviors, but follow-up to determine long-term success was a problem. 50 references
