Abstract: The commission is enhancing public awareness of the victim compensation program by providing inservice training to hospital and victim assistance personnel so they may inform victims of the compensation program and procedures. The training addresses eligibility, covered crimes, benefits, investigation procedures, and hearing procedures. Case statistics include a summary by island of the numbers of cases carried over, new applications, awards, closed denials, cases withdrawn, and cases pending. A summary of awards and total compensation covers for each crime the number of awards, total compensation, and average compensation per case. Information is also provided on the services provided by the Victim Witness Program of the prosecutor's office. Other information addresses compensation grants received from the Federal Government, legislation the commission will be introducing, and commission personnel. For fiscal 1991, the commission issued a total of 506 awards that had a total compensation of $807,832.17, an average per case of $1,597.
