Annotation: This report describes the applicability of the science of genetics to law enforcement and presents a plan for developing the police policies and procedures needed to manage genetic information by the year 2001.
Abstract: The study used information from a literature review and discussions with experts in the criminal justice system and the pharmaceutical industry. The analysis revealed four major issues: (1) how law enforcement will ensure the integrity and credibility of DNA information; (2) how and by whom this information will be collected, stored, and analyzed; (3) privacy and its protection; and (4) the impact of legislation on the use of genetic information by law enforcement agencies. A proactive approach to addressing these issues and making maximum use of genetic information is presented, together with a plan for implementing the process.
