Abstract: The 11 chapters of this book explore the impact of dysfunctional or imbalanced family systems on individuals and their use of chemicals. Topics addressed include: the reasons for drug and alcohol use; assessment of various stages of drug/alcohol use; the aspects of family life that make individuals at risk for drug/alcohol independence and addiction; the issues of shame, abandonment, and rejection; the developmental difficulty adult children of alcoholics experience; the prevention of drug/alcohol problems; intervention, the combination of a psychiataric and drug/alcohol problem; and drug/alcohol recovery and relapse prevention. The final chapter concludes with an exploration of problems in perception, problems in the family, and systemic problems and proposes reforms and possible solutions. 14 figures, 29 tables, and 157 references
