Annotation: This paper presents narrative information and statistics on crime trends and the disposition and treatment of offenders in Japan in recent years, with a focus on 1992; trends and countermeasures for traffic offenses are also presented.
Abstract: Part I reviews trends in crime and juvenile delinquency in recent years, with attention to 1992. Information and data on adult offenses are broken down according to penal code offenses and offenses against special laws. Crime trends are compared with other countries. A section on the internationalization of offenses and offenders considers the compulsory expulsion of foreigners and offenses by visiting foreigners. Information on crime victims is also included in Part I. Part II presents information and data on the processing and disposition of adult offenders and juvenile delinquents at the stages of prosecution, trial, corrections, and rehabilitation. Part III focuses on certain offenses and offenders. A section on juvenile delinquency addresses juvenile delinquency trends and the family backgrounds of juvenile delinquents. Other sections in Part II present information and statistics on organized criminal offenses, drug offenses, and offenses committed by mentally disordered offenders. Part IV presents information and statistics on the commission of and countermeasures against traffic offenses. Sections discuss trends and possible factors that affect the incidence of traffic offenses, the disposition of traffic offenders, the rehabilitation of traffic offenders, and the comparison of traffic offenses in Japan with traffic offenses in other countries.
