Type: Report (Annual/Periodic)
Language: English
Country: United States of America
Annotation: This report presents information on the characteristics of inmates released from the facilities of the New York State Department of Correctional Services during calendar year 1992.
Abstract: The report's primary objective is to examine the length of time in custody according to various legal-history criteria such as commitment offense, felony class category of commitment offense, minimum sentence length, and maximum sentence length. For comparative purposes, data on time served for persons released in earlier years are provided. A total of 28,361 persons were released from custody during calendar year 1992. The largest group of releasees consisted of 20,346 persons released to parole supervision at the discretion of the Board of Parole. Approximately 12 percent of the 1992 releasees were persons released to parole supervision under conditional release. An inmate who has served two-thirds of a maximum sentence is required by law to be released to parole supervision as a conditional release. Tables and figures show type of release; offense type by time served; felony class category of conviction offense by time served; minimum and maximum sentence by time served; drug offenders and time served; age, sex, and county of commitment of 1992 releases; and time served by release year for 1988-92. Appended statistics address the range of minimum and maximum sentences by felony class category; time served by specific offense for first felony offender; time served by specific offense for second felony offender; average minimum sentence by felony class, violent felony status, first or second felony status, and first releases to parole 1988-92; and penal law section number of commitment offense.
