Annotation: The Resolving Conflict Creatively Program (RCCP) reaches 70,000 students in 180 schools in New York City. Regarded as one of the most promising violence prevention programs in operation, RCCP focuses not only on high-risk students, but on all students.
Abstract: RCCP is unique in its emphasis on school change and the creation of a safe school environment where children can experiment with constructive ways of resolving conflict. RCCP shows teachers how to encourage students to recognize their prejudices and to teach them to appreciate their diversity. RCCP's elementary school curriculum is structured around 51 lessons and workshops that include warm-up exercises, review of the class agenda, workshop activities, student evaluations, and closing activities. Some of the topics covered include communication, affirmation, cooperation, acknowledgement of feelings, creative conflict resolution, and dealing with biases. The curriculum for secondary school students is similar, but includes workshops on ways to deescalate volatile situations that might lead to violence. 2 figures
