Annotation: This five-video series is part of a workshop designed to prepare adults who work with youth to serve as instructors and facilitators in drug prevention programs for youth.
Abstract: The first video examines tobacco, alcohol, and other drug use by youths and presents the risk and protective factors that research shows hold promise in prevention efforts. The second video introduces the Social Development Strategy for implementing two key protective factors against drug use: healthy beliefs and clear standards, along with bonding, including the role that culture has in promoting bonding. The third video presents a number of ways to use healthy beliefs and clear standards in providing youths with consistent messages about drug use. The fourth session helps trainees to determine when youths are experiencing problems and explains how they can support and assist youths in getting the appropriate help. The fifth video explores the effort to maintain bonds between youths and the adults who work with them and then examines youth service as one way to provide youths opportunities for meaningful involvement in constructive activities. The videos include lectures from individuals and panels of experts, interspersed with activities that participants completed by themselves, in pairs, or in small groups.
