Annotation: Recurring themes from studies of resilient children and youth focus on the unstable or negative environment of such children and youth and the development of resilience based on multiple "transactions" between a child's individual characteristics and protective factors in his or her environment.
Abstract: Certain components of resilience can be taught, reinforced, modeled, and learned. Therefore, educators and youth professionals should support and enhance factors that are known to be related to resilience in children and youth. These factors include an easy temperament, the presence of a mentor, informal sources of support, creativity, and collaborative programs. Research studies of resilience are highlighted, and the role of parents in raising resilient children is discussed. Consideration is also paid to mentoring as a way of fostering resilience, teaching hard- to-reach youths, resilience and skills development, the importance of encouraging autonomy and responsibility in children and youth, and peer counseling to promote resilient adolescents.
