Annotation: The essays in this volume explore the problematic relationship between the theory and practice of social control and its relationship to the punishment of deviance.
Abstract: Following an introductory section, the articles deal with the prison, its history and sociology, attempts to reform it from within, and the search for alternatives to incarceration. In the next section, the authors discuss selected trends and institutions in the legal and criminal justice process, including policing techniques and the debate over proportionality in sentencing. Another group of essays examines the theoretical interface between the narrow fields of corrections and punishment, and the broader sociological study of social control. The final section raises questions about the measurement of crime and control. The three themes common to these articles -- referred to here as master shifts, ideas and policy, and deviance and control -- together comprise an agenda for future work. Chapter references
