Annotation: This article outlines an innovative approach to corrections management.
Abstract: Correctional agencies, like other government bureaucracies, have adopted a traditional organizational model, at the top of which is the chief executive who presides over expanding functional units of the agency. This pyramidal organizational structure is characterized by vertical lines of communication, standardization of procedures, and specialization of operations. While this structure ensures fair and stable services, it disallows appropriate changes. A project management approach can provide a vehicle for rapid and fruitful change within prisons. Similar to management by objectives, the project management approach is organized around specific programs, tasks, or situations; the emphasis is on completing assigned tasks toward the attainment of a specific goal. The main strengths of the project management approach lie in its flexibility and ability to deal with unfamiliar situations. 12 references and 1 note
