| Abstract: |
A representative of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration details the results of nearly a decade of study of drunk driving and experimentation with various alternative law enforcement and treatment programs. Testimony from representatives of citizen action groups provides the benefit of their experience in focusing attention on the drinking driver at the State and national levels. They also profile legislation that has resulted from these efforts. Victims of drunk drivers tell about the costs of their victimization, and representatives from the medical and statistics fields present their findings on the problem. Law enforcement officials testify about their successes, failures, and frustrations in attempting to protect the public from drunk drivers. Senator Claiborne Pell of Rhode Island and Congressman Michael Barnes of Maryland testify about Federal legislation they have proposed to help counter drunk driving throughout the Nation.
