A 6-month study of juveniles remanded to prison custody was conducted in England; probation officers in remand centers and local prisons were asked to complete a short form about characteristics of juveniles received in custody on remand. |

Abstract: |
Information was provided on 374 juveniles aged 15 and 16 years who were remanded to custody between April 1 and September 30, 1990. Study findings revealed that over one-third of juveniles remanded to custody were of West Indian or Guyanese origin. A substantial proportion of the sample was remanded to custody by adult magistrate courts rather than by juvenile courts. Most juveniles were charged with more than one offense; 23 percent committed a violent offense, and 4 percent committed a sexual offense. It appeared that reoffending while on bail was an important characteristic of those remanded to custody. There was considerable variation between local authority areas in the number of juveniles remanded to custody, and about one-third of those remanded to custody did not receive final custodial disposals. 9 tables |
