Annotation: Ten lessons contain information and activities about conflict and violence and ways to avoid violence.
Abstract: The lessons teach a three-step process called the Three "R" System. This system involves "Respect, Reflect, Resolve." The first step in avoiding violence is to recognize and "respect" the inherent worth of all human beings. The second step in avoiding violence is to "reflect." Reflection involves taking the time to assess a situation, gain an understanding of what is happening, and determine the possible peaceful solutions to the situation. The third step to avoiding violence is to "resolve" the conflict peacefully by choosing an alternative that will allow everyone involved to walk away with their worth as an individual intact. Mediation is proposed as one of the best ways to do this. Mediation involves arriving at an agreement between two or more people or between two or more parties through the involvement and guidance of another person or party. The outline for each lesson contains a lesson description, objectives, key concepts and vocabulary, steps in lesson presentation, general discussion, and additional activities. Some lesson plans include information on relevant law. Also included are guidelines for establishing a school-based mediation program. Appended supplementary information
