Annotation:
To control drug abuse and violent crime, South Carolina has adopted a comprehensive and balanced approach to its use of Federal drug grant funds, working on both demand and supply aspects by subsidizing prevention and treatment programs and assisting law enforcement and the court system.
Abstract:
South Carolina's Department of Public Safety funded 118 grants to State and local agencies between July 1993 and June 1994, for a total of $8,807,636. Funds targeted drug prevention and education, drug treatment and rehabilitation, criminal justice and law enforcement, jail management, and management information systems. With the funding, 21,008 students received Drug Abuse Resistance Education (DARE) in elementary and middle schools; 1,455 incarcerated offenders received drug abuse treatment; 2,266 multijurisdictional drug investigations were conducted; 2,393 drug arrests were made, resulting in the conviction of 1,306 individuals; 1,166 street drug sales investigations were conducted, resulting in 1,196 arrests and the conviction of 641 individuals; eight local automated National Incident-Based Reporting Systems were established; and three Automated Fingerprint Identification System stations were set up.
