Annotation: This Canadian manual provides information on youth violence; it is intended to assist the police in working with the community in developing effective, proactive strategies for preventing and addressing incidents of youth violence.
Abstract: The manual is to be used as an aid and resource for front- line police officers in responding to incidents of youth violence, as well as a resource for school liaison officers, community relations officers, and crime prevention specialists. It focuses on both the broad definitions of youth violence as well as the more narrow definitions, that is, those implemented by the Criminal Code. To facilitate the use of the manual as a reference for dealing with specific cases, it is organized according to the information relevant to the special context of a case. The general categories of cases include specific reported incidents of violence, groups of related incidents, and unreported incidents or general references. The special context of cases include school violence, collective violence, family/residential violence, dating violence, sexual assaults, and the violent behavior of children under 12 years old. The manual features several themes that are at the core of an effective police response to youth violence. These include the development of a balanced community response to youth violence, a structured response, an assurance that victims' needs are addressed, assurance that due process is understood and followed, and the use of a problemsolving approach.
