Abstract: |
These statistics are presented in 80 tables in the following nine sections: (1) Prison Institutions of Sri Lanka; (2) Departmental Staff; (3) Unconvicted Prisoners (14 categories); (4) Convicted Prisoners (25 categories); (5) Direct Admission to the Training School for Youthful Offenders; (6) Death Sentences; (7) Prisoners Released on Work Release Scheme, License Scheme and Home Leave Scheme; (8) The Value of Industrial and Agricultural Output; and (9) General (eight categories). During the period under review, the admissions of unconvicted and convicted prisoners decreased; the number of persons sentenced for narcotic drugs and excise offenses together constituted 59.5 percent of the total admissions. Among convicted persons admitted, 82.1 percent were sentenced for terms of less than 1 year, and 79.5 percent were sentenced to prison in default of payment of fines. Admissions to the Training School for Youthful Offenders recorded an increase. The number of women prisoners in 1994 showed a decrease. Terminology, figures, chronology |
