Annotation: In December 1994, a short tandem repeat (STR) analysis system based on the quadruplex developed at the Forensic Science Service in the United Kingdom was implemented for routine use at Canada's Centre of Forensic Sciences.
Abstract: The STR system features a multiplex amplification of four STR loci, coupled with automated fluorescence detection using a gene sequencer and analysis software. A bloodstained knife was retrieved from an extensively fire-damaged scene of a double murder in Canada. Visual examination revealed a fine layer of soot on the knife and a faint smeared stain on the blade. Fingerprint analysis using a cyanoacrylate ester fuming technique revealed the suspect's fingerprint on the knife blade. Subsequent DNA typing based on multiplex amplification at four STR loci confirmed the blood on the knife matched one of the deceased. 14 references, 1 table, and 2 figures
