Abstract: The report is divided into 10 chapters: (1) Prison Population; (2) Remand Prisoners; (3) Young Offenders Under Sentence; (4) Adult Male Prisoners Under Sentence; (5) Adult Female Prisoners Under Sentence; (6) Non-criminal Prisoners; (7) Fine Defaulters; (8) Life Sentence Prisoners; (9) Ethnic Origin and Nationality of the Prison Population; and (10) Segregated Inmates, Restraints and Special Cells. Notes at the end of the volume provide further information on: Imprisonment (Adults); Custodial Penalties for Young Offenders; Life Imprisonment; Summary of Relevant Legislation; Seasonal Adjustment; Data Sources and Accuracy; Recording Practice; and Related Publications. Data were not available to update the analysis of reconvictions of inmates following discharge from custodial sentences which was contained in the 1994 edition of this volume.
