Annotation: Based on a survey of 20 drug court programs that have been operational for more than 1 year, this overview focuses on the operational elements currently deemed critical to program effectiveness and the implementation issues that have emerged.
Abstract: The information presented in this volume was supplied from drug court judges and staff. General background information on the responding drug court programs encompasses the population served and the date the drug court program began, the locus of the program in the judicial process, program goals, types of cases targeted, and categories of defendants targeted. Other background information addresses eligibility criteria, the typical sanction prior to initiation of the drug court program, and a profile of the population served by responding drug court programs. Also included is information on program capacity and enrollment, the case screening process and final determination regarding program eligibility, judicial assignment, resources required for program implementation, and the cost benefits of drug court programs. Other information provided is under the categories of program procedures, methods for maintaining information on drug court participant performance, treatment and rehabilitation services provided to drug court participants, program evaluation/assessment, and program operational/planning issues. Appended general caseflow information on responding jurisdictions, participation requirements of responding programs, and graduation requirements of responding programs
