Annotation: This report informs the public about significant events that occurred within the Federal Bureau of Prisons in 1996 and about the Bureau's goals and objectives for the future; it also provides an overview of each correctional facility, as well as statistical information about staff and inmates.
Abstract: The report first reviews the Bureau's mission statement, its core values, its customer service plan, and customer service standards. The overview of the Bureau's fiscal 1996 accomplishments is presented under the Bureau's six national goals. The goals pertain to inmate population management, human resource management, security and facility management, correctional leadership and effective public administration, inmate programs and services, and the building of partnerships. The strategic planning objectives for fiscal year 1997 are also presented under each of these national goals. The report notes that although the primary business of the Bureau of Prisons is operating correctional facilities, certain administrative, support, and policy functions are conducted by the Central Office, six regional offices, and two training centers. The work of each of these entities is described. Information and data on each of the Bureau's correctional facilities covers security level, judicial district, capacity, population, staff, location, address, and phone and fax numbers. The Bureau's Community Corrections and Detention Division is responsible for the development and implementation of policies and procedures related to the administration or approximately 600 community corrections and detention contract facilities nationwide. Offices responsible for these programs are listed. Statistical data on inmates address number of inmates, inmate characteristics, inmate status, sentences, and offenses. Data on Bureau personnel address gender, race, education, and age.
